Clerel

Updated: Aug 10

Clerel (@clerel) is a singer-songwriter & musician born in Cameroon but based in Montreal, QC. He grew up listening to Michael Jackson, Bryan Adams, along with formative Cameroonian musicians Manu Dibango, Richard Bona and Francis Bebey. He began learning to play instruments when his roommate taught him some guitar chords in college. Singing was introduced to him by his grandmother who would sing to him as a kid. Although his parents steered him into the sciences, music was always his passion. While in Ohio at university as a pre-med chemistry major, he became more familiar with American Soul music; playing guitar was his escape. After he graduated and moved to Montreal, he got more involved in music by joining cover bands, performing at open mics and then released his first EP “Songs From Under a Guava Tree” in 2019. He has even played acoustic guitar for a virtual performance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Clerel’s music is very much rooted in his experiences as an African immigrant, but also influenced by the American soul music he feel in love with. His sound is a bit of jazz, soul and Cameroonian music. Make sure to checkout his music on all streaming platforms!
